Giethoorn — the village where the roads run out

Giethoorn is one of those places that sounds made up until you are standing in it. There is no road through the old village. Houses sit on their own small islands, joined to each other by more than 170 little wooden bridges, and the way to get anywhere is on foot or on the water.

People call it the Venice of the Netherlands, which undersells it. Venice is grand and busy. Giethoorn is quiet, low and green — thatched roofs, gardens running down to the canal, ducks that clearly own the place.

Why go with a driver rather than by train

Getting to Giethoorn on public transport takes the better part of three hours each way and involves a train, then a bus that does not run often. Most people who try it arrive tired, at the same time as the tour coaches, and spend the day watching the clock.

We drive you door to door in about an hour and a half, and we leave early. That one decision — arriving before the crowds — is the difference between a village that feels like a postcard and one that feels like a queue.

Your driver stays with you the whole day. That means no timetable, no meeting point, and no rush. If you fall in love with a terrace by the water and want another hour, you have another hour.

The boat is the point

You have not really seen Giethoorn until you are on the water, at eye level with the front gardens.

We can put you on a covered VIP boat with your own skipper — this is what we recommend, and it is what most of our guests choose. Someone else steers, you sit back, and you get the stories: which house is the oldest, why the canals were dug in the first place, where the peat cutters lived. It is the relaxed option and the one that families and older travellers are happiest with.

If you would rather do it yourself, there are small electric boats you can steer with no licence and no experience. They cost less and they are good fun, though someone in your group has to actually drive.

Either way, tell your driver what you fancy and it is arranged when you arrive.

What else fits into the day

A working cheese farm sits on the route north. You can watch Gouda being made the traditional way and taste your way through the young and the aged before deciding what to take home.

The Giethoorn museum is small and unpretentious, and it does a lovely job of showing how families lived here before the visitors came — when this was a poor peat-cutting village, not a picture on Instagram.

And from the end of August, the fruit fields along the way open up. You walk the rows, pick your own straight from the plant, and pay for what ends up in the basket. Children who have been sitting politely all morning tend to come alive at this point.

A fixed price, agreed before you book

The price you see is for the whole minivan, for the whole day. It does not change if traffic is bad, and it does not change per person — four of you or seven, it is the same vehicle.

Boat hire, museum tickets and lunch are paid on the day, so you only pay for what you actually decide to do.
