Zaanse Schans — windmills that still work

Zaanse Schans is not a museum village pretending to be alive. The mills here still turn, still grind, and still make things — paint pigment, linseed oil, mustard, spices. You can walk inside, climb the wooden stairs and stand next to gears the size of a car while they groan around you.

This was the industrial heart of the Netherlands once. Hundreds of mills lined this stretch of the river Zaan, powering the first industrial region in Europe. What is left has been gathered here along the water, green-painted timber houses and all.

A half day that fits anywhere

It is twenty minutes from Amsterdam. That makes it the easiest thing on our list: you can be back in the city for lunch, or roll it into a bigger day.

Because we go early, you get the riverside path before the coaches arrive. By eleven it is busy. At ten past ten it is windmills, water and not much else.

Good with children

Flat paths, short distances, and things that move. The clog carver takes a rough block of poplar and produces a wooden shoe in about five minutes, which is genuinely impressive to watch at any age. Next door the cheese farm hands out samples, and nobody minds if a child tries six.

If you are travelling with little ones, tell us and we will fit the child seats before we collect you — no charge, and no wrestling with straps in the street.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam?

About 20 minutes by road, which is why it works so well as a half day.

Is it free to visit?

Walking around the village and along the windmills costs nothing. Going inside a mill has a small entry fee, paid at the door.

Is it good for young children?

Very. It is flat, short, outdoors, and there is a lot to look at. The clog demonstration holds their attention better than you would expect.

Can we combine it with something else?

Yes — Volendam and Marken are the usual pairing and make a full day. We also run it alongside a Schiphol drop-off if you are flying out later.
