Things to do in The Hague

Den Haag is where the government sits, where Vermeer's best-known painting hangs, and where the Netherlands keeps its beach. It is an hour from Amsterdam and it does not feel like Amsterdam at all.

Den Haag, and why it is not a second Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a merchant city and it looks like one: tall narrow houses built to a tax on frontage width, packed onto canals dug for cargo. The Hague was built for a different purpose — a court, then a government — and it shows. The streets are wider, there are embassies where Amsterdam has warehouses, and there is a great deal more grass.

It is also the only major Dutch city with a beach, which is a stranger fact than it sounds. Scheveningen is not a day trip from The Hague; it is part of it, about fifteen minutes from the parliament building.

What a day in The Hague actually looks like

The centre is compact and walkable — the Mauritshuis, the Binnenhof, the Escher museum and the Lange Voorhout are all within about ten minutes of each other on foot. Madurodam and Scheveningen are not: they sit north-west of the centre, near each other, and that is the one point in the day where a car saves you real time.

Two things worth knowing before you plan. The Binnenhof has been under a long renovation, so check what is open before you build a day around going inside it. And the Peace Palace, which people often assume is a museum, is a working court — the visitor centre and the gardens are the realistic version of that visit.

If you have children, the order that works is Madurodam first thing, lunch, then the beach. If you do not, start at the Mauritshuis before it fills up.

Qué ver

  1. The Mauritshuis

A small seventeenth-century townhouse next to the Binnenhof holding a collection most countries would need a wing for: Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, Fabritius' The Goldfinch, Rembrandt's Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp.

Consejo del conductor: It is genuinely small. Two hours is plenty, and that is what makes it a good first stop rather than a whole day.

  2. The Binnenhof and the Ridderzaal

The courtyard the Dutch parliament has used since the thirteenth century, built around the Hall of Knights and a rectangular pond called the Hofvijver. The complex is in the middle of a renovation that has run for years, so treat the inside as uncertain and the outside as the point.

Consejo del conductor: Stand on the far side of the Hofvijver rather than in the courtyard. That is the view on the postcards, and it takes two minutes to walk round.

  3. Madurodam

The Netherlands rebuilt at 1:25 — canal houses, Schiphol, the Delta Works, windmills that turn. It was built in 1952 as a memorial to George Maduro, and it is the one attraction here that works equally well for a five-year-old and an adult who wants the country explained in an hour.

Consejo del conductor: Go in the morning. It is largely outdoors, and it is the sort of place that is much better before the coach parties land.

  4. Scheveningen

The Hague has a full seaside resort inside the city limits: a long sand beach, a pier with a Ferris wheel, and a working harbour at the south end. Fifteen minutes from the Mauritshuis, and a completely different city.

Consejo del conductor: Out of season is not a wasted trip. The beach pavilions stay open and an empty North Sea beach in October is its own thing.

  5. Panorama Mesdag

A painting of Scheveningen from 1881, fourteen metres tall and a hundred and twenty round, still standing in the purpose-built rotunda it was painted for. You walk up into the middle of it and the horizon goes all the way round.

Consejo del conductor: Do this after you have seen the real Scheveningen. The trick only lands properly once you know the beach it is showing you.

  6. Escher in Het Paleis

A former royal palace on the Lange Voorhout given over to M.C. Escher — the impossible staircases and tessellations, hung in rooms with chandeliers made by an artist who clearly enjoyed himself.

Consejo del conductor: The Lange Voorhout outside is one of the best streets in the city. Walk it even if you skip the museum.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is The Hague the capital of the Netherlands?

No — Amsterdam is the capital. But the parliament, the government, the Supreme Court and the King's working palace are all in The Hague, which is why it is treated as the seat of government. The Dutch are used to explaining this.

How long do I need in The Hague?

A full day covers the centre and Scheveningen comfortably. Half a day is enough for the Mauritshuis, the Binnenhof and lunch, but you will not reach the beach.

Is Scheveningen worth the extra half hour?

If the weather is anywhere near reasonable, yes. It is a fifteen-minute drive from the museums and it is the only place on this list where the Netherlands stops being flat farmland and becomes coast.

Can you drive us to The Hague from Amsterdam?

Our Madurodam day goes to The Hague and includes Scheveningen. For anything else, message us on WhatsApp with what you have in mind and we will tell you the price before you commit to anything.
